Convenience is what I like to consider my favourite word when travelling abroad. I like my suitcase to come out of the revolving bag dispenser first. I enjoy it when I am upgraded from Business to first class, without having to ask. I love it when they serve delicious and edible food on my flight to wherever. In addition, I turn into a screaming maniac whenever all the taxis at once disappear. Isnt this always the case? You step outside the airport and try to hail a cab, with your hands full of suitcases. Then, the only one who isnt reading a newspaper or smoking some foul cigarette speeds off to some unknown destination. So, convenience as I said is my favourite word, and convenience is airport car rental.
Airport car rental, it just makes sense. No taxis, no queues for the airport busses and absolutely no hassles. There are countless options and various car rental outlets at each and every airport. There is always a massive range of cars to choose from, ranging from budget to luxury and everything in between. I think the reason that people are so afraid of car rental is perhaps the price. Let me assure you, it couldnt be cheaper. As I sit here with laptop keys clicking away, I scan the prices first on the internet and then availability. I choose a modest 2 door, 1.4 liter Ford with all the added comfort options. I cant select a colour plus they say it wont be guaranteed. All that is left is to enter my credit card details and… done. The next step is to see if it will be waiting for me when I arrive from my flight. I am updating this article in real-time and as each event unfolds, you will be the first to know of the eventual outcome.
The plane skids to a halt. Wheels grind under tarmac and leave their indelible tar streaks on the runaway. The hostess, with her dull stare and robotic gestures instructs us to depart from the plane. The door rolls opens as the mechanical stairs meet the opening with a satisfying clang. The outside world, it welcomes me with a fresh breeze as it rolls its scent under my nose. That friends, is what we call a Score in the lexicon of business travel. I sign random papers that have been pushed in front of me and make my way to the depot, car keys in hand.

He grunts as he wrenches the door open, his stubby fingers grasping at the door handle as if it were a fresh chicken sandwich. I loathe others opening doors or beer bottles for me. However, it is his job and I am not one to deny a man of his professional courtesy. The door is closed behind me and in an instant, the fresh smell of leather, of new car smell hits me like a summer heat wave. The key finds the ignition and turns clockwise, activating the engine which purrs into life. As I leave the depot, I thank my lucky stars for internet, car rental and Camel Lights [I need to buy a pack before I head home]. Thats when a sick realization hits me. Waikiki Car Rentals Waikiki is about 1½ miles of hotels, shops and restaurants, which renting a car would be very frustrating due to the parking limitations. What few street parking there are is normally always filled and the paid parking, which is very expensive in Waikiki, is based on first come first served basis and they can also be filled when the Waikiki is busy. As such, parking is not a recommended option if you will be staying in Waikiki. It's a lot better to be walking or using the public transportation service or the taxi.
It is a different story if you want to visit the rest of the island because public transportation, even though it is very good and reliable, is also very slow. As such, renting a car in the morning and returning in the same day would be recommended, which would be enough time for a scenic drive around the island and having to park overnight in Waikiki can be avoided. Nevertheless, if you still wish to rent a car for your complete stay, make sure that your hotel will have a parking space available for you as some hotels in Waikiki do not have parking and some are very limited. Parking fees in Waikiki are very high also, which you should find out before arriving to the hotel with a car.
Neighbor Islands Car Rentals Renting a car on the neighbor islands is a must, unlike Waikiki, the only place in the neighbor island that does not require a car to move around is within your own hotel. Shuttles from airport to hotels are not easy to come by and cost as much as some car rental companies charge per day and taxies are definitely expensive considering that there is anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes drive from airport to the hotels.
Valuables in the car Fortunately we don't have a big problem with crime in Hawaii but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be alert. Under no circumstance should you leave any valuables in the car, including hidden in the trunk or under the seat. Also be alert at all the lookouts where you normally "step out of the car for a minute to take a picture." If you arrive to your hotel before 3:00 pm or depart after 12:00 noon, you may be inclined to keep your luggage in your car until you check in either at the hotel or the airport. That is not a good idea. Most hotels will be happy to hold your luggage for a few hours before you check in or after you check out and it is a lot safer that way.
Seat Belts By State Law, all front passengers of a car must use seat belts. We recommend that seat belts be used by all passengers, front and rear.
Child Seats By State Law, all children must travel in the back seat of the car restrained by a seat belt and those under seven years of age must use a child seat at all times during the trip.

Driving in Spain is essentially not very different to how we drive in the UK, but here are a few pointers to make sure that you get the best from your hire car in Murcia and avoid any potential problems.
The main difference is that in Spain they drive on the Right hand side of the road. Be especially careful when setting off from petrol stations, service areas or any off road situations such as large car parks. Take time and remind yourself of this as it can easily be forgotten after driving in Spain for a few days.
If you're driving a UK registered car in Spain leave more room between yourself and the car in front when over taking. This gives a better view of the road ahead and should eliminate any problems you might have when trying to get around slow moving traffic. The best way to eradicate this problem is to hire a car in Murcia once you reach Spain.
Spain has far stricter drink driving regulations than the UK allowing only 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per milliliter of blood. In the UK we are used to 0.8 milligrams; it's even stricter for newly licensed drivers. Our suggestion is that if you're driving in Spain avoid any alcoholic drinks if you know you are going to be driving in the near future. By sticking to this precaution you can be sure not to run into any unforeseen problems with the local police force.
As in the UK seat belts must be worn at all times by all occupants of the vehicle both in the front and back. This is common sense these days in the UK but is still rigorously enforced in Spain. Recently the rules for motorway overtaking have been re-written in Spain; make sure you clearly indicate before overtaking as well as when you pull back in on a Spanish motorway. Likewise when entering a motorway from a slip road ensure you wait until the white line becomes broken before pulling out. Not obeying either of these rules could land you with an on the spot fine.
Children under 12 years of age must not travel in the front of a car in Spain unless the car is fitted with a suitably adapted seat belt restraint. This is a rule we don't have in the UK and when you and your family are enjoying a holiday it can be easily forgotten.

Leave the car with the hazard lights on and warning triangles set up at the appropriate distances away, sit safely on the grass verge until help arrives.
A ‘green card' for driving in Spain is not compulsory but it's a good idea to advise your insurers of your intended trip. It's also a good idea to let your bank know that you are traveling abroad so that they don't put a hold on your card if transactions pop up in places they wouldn't expect and they think they might be fraudulent.
A vast majority of Spanish filling stations now accept credit cards out of hours I.e. between 12 pm and 3 pm, or late at night. However your card may not work as they are designed for Spanish credit cards only. Be sure to top up with fuel regularly and during shop opening hours to avoid running dry.
Always carry with you a new photo identity driver's license, your passport, vehicle registration certificate and relevant insurance documents from your hire company.
